Holger Preuss

Holger Preuss is a Professor of Sport Economics and Sport Sociology at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany. He is also an adjunct professor at the University of Ottawa, Canada, and an international scholar at the State University of New York (Cortland).

He served as editor of the European Sport Management Quarterly (2012-2014), one of the leading journals in sport management, and is currently an associate editor for the Journal of Sport & Tourism. He has published 17 books and over 180 articles in international journals and books. In the past decade, he has been invited to deliver more than 180 presentations worldwide.

His research focuses on sustainability and socio-economic aspects of sports events. He collaborated with the federal ministry of the interior on developing a national strategy for mega sports events and contributed to high-performance sport reform. He is a consultant for the OECD regarding the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. He also was chairman of the evaluation commission on sustainability for Paris 2024. He worked with the EOC Bureau of Sports (Brussels) on a project to help NOCs in Europe implement strategic management.

Holger Preuss is a member of the IOC commission on legacy and sustainability, the UIPM (Union International Pentathlon Modern) innovation commission, and the WFDF (World Flying Disc Federation) ethics commission. Additionally, he serves as the sustainability advisor for the FISU World Games 2025.
